Sasha Stiles: Poems After Jangar at Sapar Contemporary

Sasha Stiles turns the Kalmyk-Mongolian epic Jangar into scrolls, encoded beadwork and code in her first show at Sapar Contemporary in New York, on view through November 6.

Sasha Stiles is showing THIS PLACE WAS HOME BEFORE I LIVED HERE: POEMS AFTER JANGAR at Sapar Contemporary in New York, on view September 25 to November 6, 2026. It is the gallery's first exhibition of her work. Stiles, a first-generation Kalmyk-American artist and poet, builds the show around Jangar, which the gallery describes as "a centuries-old Kalmyk-Mongolian epic that has survived migration, persecution, deportation, and diaspora," treating poetry as a technology of inheritance.

The work moves across original poetry, 3D-printed objects, cyanotypes, encoded beadwork, spoken word and hybrid scrolls. On October 1 she shared a detail from one scroll that pairs her poem POPLARS with encoded verse from Jangar, made from "Tea-stained linen, resin, copper, camel bone and Mongolian turquoise, fluorite and Mongolian jade." A day earlier she posted an "Analog Binary Code translation/encryption of Kalmyk-Mongolian epic poetry in Mongolian jade and copper," linking copper's role in grids and AI data centers to turquoise as a copper mineral: "Together, the copper and turquoise from which this poem is crafted form a kind of deep-time circuitry."

New York is one of several stops this fall. LOREM IPSUM VARIORUM, her solo show at Palazzo Citterio in Milan built on her ongoing collaboration with her AI alter ego Technelegy, runs through October 25. On October 5 she announced she is in the lineup for AURORA Biennial 2026, which takes place November 4 to 21 in Dallas and Fort Worth alongside artists including Josh Kline and Trevor Paglen.
