Pindar Van Arman: Emergence to Reflection at ./spiral

Pindar Van Arman was one of 11 artists in ./spiral, a SuperRare group exhibition curated by Atay Ilgun and Jonathan Carmel that ran September 3 to 10 at Fondazione Aversano in New York. The brief asked artists who helped shape AI, generative and protocol-based art to return to an earlier work, tool or unresolved idea and extend it from where they stand now.

Van Arman's answer was Emergence to Reflection, which SuperRare described as "a signed 1/1 artist's-proof triptych spanning 2018, 2023 and 2024." He called it "the most concise record of my early ai journey." The collector Colborn picked up the Emergence to Reflection print, and Van Arman let holders of the full AI Portrait set commission a 1/1 triptych of their own pieces until the show closed. By September 10, SuperRare said, five collectors had taken him up on it.

His AI Portrait series covers a lot of ground. First Sparks grew out of 128 paintings commissioned for VIEWS at the Tribeca Film Festival and took first place in the 2018 Robot Art Competition. Reflection, he says, is "100% on-chain," with its process unfolding in 22 Solidity layers.

His newest work takes the robot out of the studio. CloudPainter, his current project, is an AI painting agent housed in an electric truck that Van Arman co-pilots, painting landscapes layer by layer on steel and copper plates as it reads its surroundings. In late August he began sharing CloudPainter work every Saturday, including Oklahoma, a 36 x 20 inch acrylic on metal.
