Time Runs Backward: OTO’s Polylith
OTO's Polylith reads Bitcoin from a far future block back toward Genesis, a generative Ordinals work that updates with every new block.
OTO is a Japan-based digital artist who moved from Ethereum NFTs to Bitcoin Ordinals in 2023. Polylith, his long-form generative work on Bitcoin, treats time as a flow from future to past: visualization runs from block 8,400,000 backward to the Genesis Block, with each block opening another “page” in an evolving structure.
At the center is the cube, or “Lith”, a stand-in for the Bitcoin block itself. OTO has said he wanted complex themes held in one simple object, drawing on Josef Albers and Bauhaus geometry so color and shape shift with context. Live chain data feeds the piece: average transaction size shapes glitch density, inscription activity changes background texture, and larger inscriptions slow the pace of change. Collectors can scroll earlier blocks; the system fetches data in batches and caches it locally.
ORD.NET lists the collection at 3,333 unsealed parents. Because the work is wired to the chain, it does not finish. OTO frames authorship as building an open structure that keeps inviting change, with observation as part of how meaning forms.
