Entangled Others: Sediment Nodes Finds a Hidden World in Murky Water

Sofia Crespo and Feileacan McCormick trained their own neural networks on dive footage to show the life inside sediment clouds. From November 9, Sediment Nodes comes to the East Slovak Gallery in Košice.

After a storm, sediment laden water looks like nothing at all, a brown cloud that hides whatever lives inside it. Sofia Crespo and Feileacan McCormick, the duo behind Entangled Others and both keen divers, wanted to convey what it feels like to move through that cloud. Sediment Nodes (2022 to 2023) is their answer: a generative video work in which silt, clay and sand turn out to host algae, bacteria and small creatures, all scattering and bending the light. "We spare little thought of the suspended sediment itself, for it signals that there is or was movement, yet it too is full of life, colour and form," they write.

The images come from custom generative adversarial networks that the pair trained on footage from their own dives, alongside synthetic data they produced and publicly available imagery. What emerges is an evolving array of artificial organisms and landscapes, "as if we're discovering a vibrant world hidden just beneath the surface," in the words of the Toledo Museum of Art. Nothing in the frame is a real species, yet everything behaves like a living thing, which is the point of a practice built on the ties between living systems and the technologies we use to look at them.

The works were minted as NFTs on Ethereum, and Sediment Nodes #1 to #3 hung in Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms at the Toledo Museum of Art in 2025, with #1 listed from a private collection. The series has travelled widely since 2022: the V&A showed it in Room 74A during its first Digital Art Season (October 14 to November 30, 2024), and it has screened at Signal Festival in Prague, Sónar+D and, this year, in Liquid Chimeras, the duo's solo show at MEET in Milan.

From November 9 to 30, Sediment Nodes comes to the East Slovak Gallery (Východoslovenská galéria) at Hlavná 27 in Košice, opening at 10 AM. It is part of EXTENDED, the gallery's platform for regular shows of digital and new media art, supported by the city of Košice and Creative Industry Košice in a city that belongs to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Media Arts. Entangled Others' work is held by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, the Onassis Foundation and Colección SOLO.
