Dmitri Cherniak: Hummingbirds, Lions and Color Types From a New Algorithm

Dmitri Cherniak is sharing a new run of algorithmic drawings in green, blue and red color types, alongside a live browser version of Ringers in Motion.

Dmitri Cherniak has spent the past two weeks posting new drawings on X. Each sheet is packed with outlined dancing figures, animals, hands, eyes, plants and smiling computers, filled in with faceted shards of color. Over September 28 and 29 he shared three palette versions: "Verdant type" in green, "Aquatic type" in blue with sharks and jellyfish among the dancers, and "Inferno type" in red with horses and cattle. Before those came a cream sticker-sheet composition titled "Water, color, pack" and a crowd of figures hidden in dense foliage, "Crypsis at the harvest festival." He also posted a printed sheet colored in by hand with crayon: "This algorithm is very good for kids coloring sheets."

The newest sheets are lighter and more open. "Literal miracle" (October 1) puts rearing lions among the dancers on a pale blue ground. On October 5 came faceted hummingbirds and hand signs, captioned "Trying to hold the spirit of a hummingbird in one's hands," followed by four square versions. Looking back on September 20 at a version from May, he wrote: "For those keeping track, started with this around 6 months ago, now we are at where we are at. Iteration, iteration, iteration."

He is also revisiting Ringers. On September 29 he put Ringers in Motion, the generative animation he made for the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (on view through November 14), online: "Try it live in your browser and let me know what you think." On October 3 he asked "Any interest?" over renders of a nine-candle holder in black and brushed metal, and the next day said he had ordered a prototype and "should have two variations in person at the end of the month." On October 12 he joins collector Benjamin Gross and curator Tal Lanir at the museum for a talk on art, code and collecting.
