Andrea Belloni: A Homage to Herbert W. Franke, Written in Code
Physicist and generative artist Andrea Belloni is building Homage To Herbert W. Franke, a tribute recognized by the Foundation Herbert W. Franke, ahead of the pioneer's centenary year in 2027.
Andrea Belloni is a physicist and generative artist whose work grows out of a Physics degree from La Sapienza University in Rome, where his bio says he "developed a fascination for complex systems, chaos theory, and fractals," followed by several years in robotics, control systems and data analysis. His rule is strict: "every piece is the product of custom code he writes himself, deliberately eschewing traditional digital art tools or post-processing software." He has released work on Tezos, Ethereum and Bitcoin, and on October 4 he returned to Flowing, his 2023 Ordinals collection of 100 inscriptions, inspired by Heraclitus: "The movement comes from the use of a 3D noise field in which time flows along the third coordinate." In September he also released Still Tied on objkt for the first anniversary of ICONĂ, in which "Four million points of light trace a single closed path."
His main focus right now is "Homage To Herbert W. Franke," which he calls "a project that really defines me." On September 30 he wrote: "It is a privilege to have this project recognized by the Foundation Herbert W. Franke as I develop this tribute for Herbertâs 100th birthday celebrations." He has been sharing the work in progress as a collection, writing on October 3, "I am working on this to celebrate his 100th birthday." A new video followed on October 7: translucent ribbons of yellow and blue light that fold and loop against a black ground.
The tribute lands in a busy season for Franke. The Foundation's HERBERT W. FRANKE 100 program opens the centenary year on January 9, 2027, at Planetarium Bochum, during the finissage of "Herbert W. Franke / Gottfried Jäger. Art and Construction" at Museum Folkwang, which opens on October 16, 2026, and runs until January 10, 2027. Events then continue through 2027 in London, Vienna, Rijeka, Innsbruck and New York.
