XCOPY: Breaker, a Portrait of a Destructive Agent, Changes Hands for $660,000
Breaker, a 2019 XCOPY 1/1 first minted on SuperRare, has joined a new collection in a private sale of $660,000, a reminder of how much weight the artist's early character pieces still carry.
On October 30, XCOPY's Breaker joined a new collection in a private sale of $660,000. Eli Scheinman, who facilitated the deal, announced it on X and called the work "one of the truly great 2019 character pieces." The buyer has not been named.
Breaker was minted on SuperRare on January 29, 2019, as a 1/1 with a single line of description: "Portrait of a destructive agent." It is a looping GIF of a skull like head boxed into a frame of cyan glitch, cut through by vertical bars of hot pink that flicker in and out, so the figure seems to be caught behind its own static. The palette, the noise and the nervous loop are the language XCOPY has refined since the early days of crypto art: portraits of figures who are less people than symptoms, death and disorder rendered at screen resolution.
The work's path tracks the market around it. According to the daily report 24 Hours of Art, Breaker first went to the collector BnolitC by artist transfer in April 2019, sold to teep on July 30, 2021 for 200 ETH ($494,152 at the time) and then to Roses on February 5, 2024 for 100 ETH ($229,916). The new figure is the highest of the 3 recorded prices in dollar terms.
Private deals like this rarely surface, which makes the announcement itself part of the story. Early SuperRare 1/1s from 2018 and 2019 are a finite archive of the first wave of crypto art, and Breaker shows collectors are still willing to pay serious money for the character portraits at its center.
