William Mapan: A New Work for the V&A
After a visit to the V&A with Matt DesLauriers, William Mapan is preparing a new work with Avant Arte for the museum's Digital Art Season and its upcoming Vera Molnar exhibition.
William Mapan has a new work on the way for the V&A. On October 7 he shared that he had been working on something new following a visit to the museum in London with Matt DesLauriers, where the two were introduced to the collection by its curators. "I found myself thinking about how artists have used computation to explore form, colour and space," he wrote.
Those conversations became the starting point for a new work created with Avant Arte for the V&A's Digital Art Season and the upcoming Vera Molnar exhibition. Avant Arte describes it as part of a collaboration with both artists, made with the V&A and released as 2 limited edition prints. The teaser Mapan posted shows a field of flat, overlapping shapes in muted pink, ochre, olive and blue, crossed by jagged, wandering black lines, under the words "Coming soon."
In the studio, meanwhile, painting continues: a glimpse of Mapan's studio shared by Hugo Pouchard shows large canvases in blues and yellows on the wall and easel.

It is a fitting context for an artist who describes his practice as exploring painting, coding and machines. His site gathers series and projects such as Paysages Plausibles, Anticyclone, Strands of Solitude and Distance, made for LACMA, alongside his sketchbooks and études, work that has long treated code as a way to paint. Details of the release have not yet been announced; Avant Arte is taking registrations for updates.
