Vinnie Hager: Letters From Marfa Takes the Mail Offline

5 years after Letters put 1,000 hand-drawn envelopes on Ethereum, Vinnie Hager is bringing the series to the Artist Fair in Marfa as real postcards you can send.

"Letters started onchain, now they will be sent through the post office," Vinnie Hager posted on October 20. On Friday, October 23, the Baltimore artist brings Letters From Marfa to the Artist Fair at Art Blocks' Marfa Weekend in West Texas, with a simple instruction: "Bring a physical address. Send a physical postcard." The postcards will be available in person and online the same day.

The project goes back to Letters, Hager's genesis series from October 2021: 1,000 hand-drawn digital works, each a 1 of 1, preserved on Ethereum. Each drawing is built around the envelope, a symbol that, in the artist's words, "has long served as a vessel for intimate messages and negotiations across distances." Gestural mark making and the habits of tagging meet the possibilities of repetition, and the series as a whole reads as a conversation about communication, exchange and transaction in a digital era. Its sign off has followed it ever since: "Send more mail."

Marfa closes the loop. A series about sending things through networks now travels the oldest network there is, the post office, as a card someone addresses and drops in the mail, the same small personal act the drawings were about. It fits a practice that moves easily between screen and studio: in the same week, Hager shared Like A Cherry, a 9 by 12 inch acrylic on canvas, and Thank Your Lucky Stars (2026). "Next week we are sending Letters from Marfa," he wrote on October 16. Bring an address.
