Anna Carreras: 10,000 Marbles, 3 Layers and a Screen in Her Hand

From a wall of 10,000 marbles sorted by code in Granollers to Idoni, her 3-layer Art Blocks work, now running on tiny hand-built screens, Anna Carreras brings artisanal generative art to Marfa.

In Granollers, just outside Barcelona, Anna Carreras handed 10,000 colored marbles to an algorithm. Caniques, which she first made in 2025, was shown at Responsive Dreams 2026, the generative art festival The Generative Art Museum held at Roca Umbert Fàbrica de les Arts from September 25 to 27. On October 12 she described it as "a massive 6-meter artwork, built from 10,000 marbles, each one a pixel." Through the night, every marble checks its neighbors 3 times and decides whether to join them, move away, mix or change color, so groups and patterns form and dissolve. "Not even the artist knows what will happen," the festival text says. Her own name for it: "artisanal generative art," hand-coded output plus a hand-crafted mural.

The festival also launched Idoni, released on Art Blocks on September 25 with The Generative Art Museum as a fixed edition of 128 unique works on Ethereum. It is an infinite animation built in 3 layers. Layer I recursively draws an almost architectural structure, Layer DO sends tiny particles wandering through it, and Layer NI follows them, cutting clippings out of the image and pasting them back until the geometry glitches. The viewer can step in: press c (crema!) to burn the NI layer, a (atura) to freeze a single frame, or click to guide the particles. On October 14 she shared it "on the big BIG screen" at Roca Umbert, playing to a DJ set.

Since then she has been shrinking it. On October 11 she reported that the electronics of her hardware build were "finally fine," the software was not, and called it "a great chance for improvement." By October 15 Idoni was running "on the mini screen," and she summed up the road from code to object: "electronics + software + calibrating screens + hacking + optimization." The same day she was preparing prints for an upcoming exhibition, "loving the crisp digital details on paper."

This week the work is in Marfa, Texas. The Art Blocks Marfa Weekend schedule listed Carreras on the panel after the Thursday screening of Emergence in Marfa at the Crowley Theater, with director Logan Woodyard and artists James Merrill and Jeff Davis. On Friday, Art Blocks pictured her work to open the first day of its Artist Fair at Saint George Hall, where a new group of artists takes over on Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM.
